Pierre Welcomes Homefront South Dakota

Three SDPB staff members were invited by the South Dakota Historical Society to bring the Homefront South Dakota preview film screening event to the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre, SD on Sunday, August 26th.  Ronette Rumpca of the Cultural Heritage Center did an incredible job of promoting the event to area veterans and local citizens, resulting in an audience of 88 interested individuals! Attendees were also able to tour the museum free of charge that afternoon. The event was promoted in the local newspaper and with a postcard mailing. The recollections of four veterans of WWII were recorded and are archived on this web site. We give a round of applause to our host, Ronette, and the Cultural Heritage Center for the wonderful venue and for providing refreshments; and to the veterans who shared their stories.

On Monday, August 27th, SDPB was invited to address the members of the County Veterans Services Officers at their annual conference in Pierre. Sherri Rodgers-Conti gave the 100+ individuals an overview of the Homefront SD project and showed clips from THE WAR documentary. VSO's were encouraged to consider scheduling a Homefront SD event in their local communities. We also thank Larry Person, coordinator of the VSO conference, for giving us the opportunity to update the group.

SDPB's visit to Pierre was very rewarding. The event was an opportunity for SDPB to collect WWII stories and talk with a lot of veterans. All veterans have our deepest appreciation for their service and we thank the WWII veterans for sharing their war experiences with us. Their assistance and cooperation are greatly appreciated.
