HOMEFRONT:
South Dakota Stories
Miller
August 1st Was Miller Time!
Three SDPB staff members were invited by the Hand County Veterans Services Officer, David Johnson, to bring the Homefront South Dakota preview film screening event to Miller, SD on Wednesday, August 1st. This was the first community visited in the Homefront SD project. Dave did an incredible job of promoting the event to area veterans and local citizens, resulting in an audience of 92 interested individuals! The event was promoted in the local newspaper, on the local cable’s public access channel, in the VSO News column, on flyers posted in local buildings, on two large signs on opposite corners of Main Street, and even on a poster placed in the town’s busiest intersection! Seven veterans of WWII were a part of that evening’s audience, and their war-era stories were recorded that evening and are archived on this web site.
SDPB’s visit to Miller was very rewarding. We give a great pat on the back to our host, David Johnson, VSO; to Miller High School and their custodial staff for the wonderful venue; the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries for providing refreshments; and to the veterans who shared their stories. The evening was an opportunity for SDPB to collect WWII stories, and the veterans have our deepest appreciation for their service and for sharing their war experiences with us.
