HOMEFRONT: South Dakota Stories
H0t Springs

A Hot Time in Hot Springs! September 27, 2007
What a beautiful community! When we drove into town we could see the rich architectural history that's preserved in Hot Springs. Even the deer that graze uninterruptedly in town enjoy the comfortable atmosphere. Verna Denett, Director of the Springs Senior Center, and Norma Davis, President of the Senior Center, were wonderful hosts. The sign on the front of the Center let everyone in the community know that they were welcome to attend the Homefront South Dakota preview film screening event on September 27. There were 42 individuals who attended the event and six veterans were interviewed for story collection, but the story telling didn't stop there. Throughout the morning and into the afternoon, rich and emotional stories were shared about the Purple Heart that a brother received for giving his life in the war; how one family had seven out of eight brothers serve in the military; and how a young man copes with being a prisoner of war. Once again, it's so interesting to hear about the people who served on the home front by taking care of the family and farms. They are so humble and never seem to give themselves enough credit for the work they did.
We met wonderful people who live at the Hot Springs Veterans' Home as well as throughout the community. Verna and Norma really put the "spring" in the Springs Senior Center. Thanks to both of them for a wonderful day!
